Meaning, Origin, Etymology

The surname Munro was first used by descendants of a Clan of people that came from a group of people called ‘Pictish’ of ancient Scotland.  The ‘Picts’ were a people who could be found in Northern Scotland and was a group of tribal units that allied together against common enemies.  They were not a single tribe but instead a group of tribes that are thought to have originally came from Scandinavia together. There is no written record of their history and what is known of them were from writers that were Roman and Scottish later in history, and the pictures that they left behind.  They were first mentioned in written history in the year 297 by the Roman writer Eumenius and he referred to them as ‘Picti’ (the painted ones).

It is also a geographical surname for someone who lived near the mouth of the river Roe in the Irish County of Derry and they settled in Ferrindonald in Cromarty in the 11th century and they are descended from Donald O’Kane and his Irish Sept, they were said to be mercenary soldiers that were granted lands in the Mountains of Ross by a grateful King after they assisted him in defeating Viking invaders. Their origin is from the Siol O’Cain, an ancient Pictish tribe descended from Anselan O’Cain in North Moray.   In some cases in Ireland Munro / Munroe has come to replace the surname Mulroy.

Munro, Stuart Caradoc, Esq. of Teaninich, County Ross, born 20 May 1826; succeeded his father in the the estate of Teaninich.

Lineage~ The family of Munro of Fowlis, of which the Munros of Teaninich are a branch, is among the most ancient and distinguished in the north of England.  Their bravery is evidenced by two chiefs of the clan having been killed at Bannockburn, one at Holmedown Hill, and another on Pinkie Field. The direct ancestor of the present representative of the Teaninich branch, Hugh Munro, Esq., married Elizabeth daughter of Alexander Fraser, Esq., Baillic of Inverness, and had three sons, Hugh his heir; Alexander died at Lisbon; and Andrew who went to Bombay.  The eldest, Hugh Munro, Esq. of Teaninich, married Catherine daughter of William Duff, Provost of Inverness, and by her had (with three daughters, Catherine married Thomas Warrand, Esq. of Warrandfield, County Inverness; Bethia, and Alexina, both died young) four sons, 1) Hugh, Captain 78th Regiment died 1816 2) Mordo, of Dundonald, who assumed the surname of Mackenzie on succeeding to his mother’s property.  He died 1845, leaving issue Hugh Mackenzie of Ardross and Dundonnell, who died 30 July 1869, and Kenneth Mackenzie of Ardross and Dundonnell, married 1838 Mary widow of Captain Cliffe, and died 12 Dec 1878, having had, with other issue, Murdo born 1823 now of Ardross. 3) Hector Colonel died unmarried 1827. 4) John, Major-General of Teaninich. The youngest son, John Munro, Esq. of Teaninich, J.P. and D.L., General, E.I.C.S., born June 1778; purchased Teaninich from his eldest brother; he married 8 Dec 1808, Charlotte, youngest daughter of the Rev. St. John Blacker, Rector of Moira, and Prebendary of Inver, County Donegal, and died 25 Jan 1858, having had issue, 1) James St. John born 18 Nov 1811, late Major 31st regt.  2) John born 18 April 1820, Lieut. 10 Bengal Light Cavalry; died Dec 1845, two days after the battle of Moodkee, of wounds received there. 3) Stuart Caradoc now of Teaninich. 4) Maxwell William born 17 Aug 1827 died Sept 1854. 5) Charlotte married 17 Jan 1834 the Hon. George Augustus Spencer, Lieut-Col., 2nd son of the 1st Lord Churchill, and has issue.
