The Lang surname is derived from an Old English nickname ‘the lang’ ‘the long’ ‘the tall’ in the English and Scandinavian countries. In Northern England and Scotland it is a form of Long. (German, English, Scottish) The tall man. Lang is a surname of Germanic origin, closely related to Lange, Laing and Long, all of which mean “tall”. Independently of this, it is also a surname of Manchu-Chinese origin (Chinese: 郎; pinyin: Láng). In Qing dynasty China, the Niohuru family of Manchu origin sinicized and changed their family name to Lang (郎), which sounded like “wolf” (狼, also Láng) in Mandarin Chinese, since “wolf” in the Manchu language was niohuru. Lang may also have originated as a Hungarian surname, from láng, meaning “flame,” perhaps a descriptive name for a passionate individual, or for someone who worked with fire, such as a blacksmith. This name has a number of origins and can be of Scandinavian, Scottish and Irish origin. When of Scottish origin the families are a branch of the Scottish clan Leslie with the name being on record in Edinburgh from the year 146. It is sometimes used in Kintyre as a curtailed form of the name Loynachan. When from Scandinavia it is of descriptive origin, describing a tall person and possibly from the old word ‘lang’ meaning tall. In Ireland some bearers of the name Lang can be derived from the Gaelic O’Lainn sept whose native name was also anglicized as Lyng and Ling. When Gaelic names were anglicized during the 16th and 17th centuries they were often changed to Anglo equivalents that sounded most like their original Gaelic name. It is also possible that some Langs may be of the O’Longain sept in Ireland, but were more often changed to Long and Langan. The Lang surname is also found in China, adopted by descendants of the founder of Lang City in the state of Lu.
