(Hale Hail, Haugh, co. Cumberland; originally of Ponsonby, same co., temp. Edward II.; from a branch of this family descend the Earls of Bessborough). Gu. a chev. betw. three combs ar. Crest—On a ducal coronet or, three arrows, one in pale and two in saltire, the points downwards, shafts gold, feathered and pointed ar. entwined by a serpent ppr. Motto—Pro rege, lege, grege.

(confirmed by Roberts, Ulster, 1647, to Col. John Ponsonby, son and heir of Henry Ponsonby, Esq., late of Ponsonby, co. Cumberland). Gu. a chev. betw. three combs ar. Crest—On a ducal coronet or, a serpent ppr. pierced through with five darts fretty gu. Motto—Pro rege, lege, grege.
