In the early Knight Templer Rolls, this name is used as a surname. This name was highly respected. The plural form is derived from the Latin word Bile.

Bachel Byles was granted knight status in 1858. In Dod’s Peerage it mentions that Hon. Sir John Barnard Byles, Esq. of Stowmarket, Suffolk, England was the only child of W. Barnard, Esq. of Holts, Essex, England.  Alice Byll was christened in London on January 30th, 1567. Anne Bile married George Watsun in 1588. Catherine Biles married Michael Frechaut at St. Matthews, Bethnal Green in 1794. The Templer Roll of Gloucester has a record of Nicholas Bile from 1185. This is when King Henry 11, also called the Church Builder, was in power from 1159 to 1189.. In Crozier’s General Armory the surname Byles is recorded in Massachusetts referring to Joshua Byles in Boston in 1690.  The blazon reads: Per bend sinister embattled or and gules.
