Wade assigns the butterfly as an emblem representing the soul. The Symbolisms of Heraldry, W. Cecil Wade, George Redway, London, 1898 P146 It is a very pleasant symbol to find in a coat of arms, it may be multi-coloured and indeed French heraldry contains several words specifically for describing the colours of various parts of this delightful insect.
