The German surname Zimmer is of occupational origin being derived from the work a man did or the profession he pursued. In this case, Zimmer is associated with the Old High German word “zimbarari” which means simply “carpenter”. Therefore, the initial bearer of this surname was a craftsman who, protected and matured by the craft guilds, rose in rank above the peasant, and lived mainly in the newly developing towns. This was because in the manors and small villages the cottages of the serfs were simple structures and as their construction did not usually require the services of a skilled carpenter, the peasant himself ordinarily built them. It was in the cities and wealthy estates where the buildings were more substantial that skilled woodworkers were required.
