Origins of Haws:
This interesting and unique surname has two imaginable origins. The first origin of which derives from the ancient name “Haw,” itself a nickname of another name like “Hawkin” or “Havekin,” from the Olde English pre 7th Century “Hafoc.” The second origin is from a particular female name developed by the Normans, the word “Haueis,” which is from the Germanic type of word “Haduwidis” combination of the components “Hadu,” which means struggle or competition and the word “widi,” which means wide. As a particular name, this first listed as “Hawis,” in the Curia Rolls of Suffolk in the year 1208. The surname first appeared as Hawes or Hawyes in the modern era, these being the nicknames descended from the father’s name. One “Reginoll Hawes” was a previous traveler to America, departing from London in January 1634 for Virginia.
