The English family name Wynn is classified as being of personal name origin, that is, derived from a parental first name or from the font name of the grandfather or indeed a more remote ancestor of the original bearer of the surname. With regard to the family name Wynn, it indicates “son of Wynn”, a pet form of various compound first names, such as Winifrid and Winebeald, derived from the Old English “wine” meaning “friend”. It is also possible that Wynn is a variant of Gwynn, which is a derivative of the Old Welsh word “gwyn” meaning “fair, white”. Therefore, this name would originally have been given as a nickname to “one with fair hair or a pale complexion”, but in the Middle Ages Gwyn was more commonly found as a personal name.
