The surname of Boyer has many possible origins and meanings. The English meaning is a variant form of Bowyer is derived from an occupation and it means one who made and sold bows or who took care of drove cattle. It is most commonly found in the town of Bracknell today. The French version of Boyer also has a couple different origins throughout France 1) Boyer that is a personal name that was found along the Mediterranean Sea and the Rhone Valley in the Southwest of France. 2) Boye and Bouyer further to the north of France. As with the English version the French version is also a occupational surname but in France it means “bullock driver” or “herdsman” and in common French the spelling Bouvier. BOWYER OF DENHAM
Sir George Henry Bowyer 9th Bt., of Denham ourt, Bucks and 5th Bt. of Radley, Berks, late Lieut. on Staff, formerly Lieut. 4th Bn. Cheshire Regt., born Sept. 9, 1870; succeeded his uncle in 1893 he married May 4, 1899 to Ethel (from who he obtained a div. Nov. 7, 1900) the daughter of late Francis Hawkins.
Lineage ~ Thomas Bowyer living 2 Richard II marred Katherine de Knypersley and thus acquired the estate of Kynpersley, whence his descendants, who were created Baronets in 1660 were designated. His son, William Bowyer married Margaret the dauther of Nicholas Trubsbawe, and had with other issue a son, William Bowyer married Elizabeth the daughter of Erdlswick of Sandon, and had with other issue a son, Thomas Bowyer who married Janet the daughter of William Cotton de Chester, and by her had a son, Richard Bowyer of Petworth, Sussex who married Jane Gunter of Racton and had issue, William Bowyer of Petworth married Eliza the daughter of Robert Tredcroft, of Billingshurst and died 1528. His second son, Robert Bowyer, May of Chichester 1532 and 1546. His will dated July 1, 1547, was proved Jun. 22, 1552. By his wife Margaret, who was buried Aug. 30, 1563, he had five sons. His second son, Francis Bowyer an eminent merchant of London, served the office of Sheriff for that city in 1577, and was subsequently chosen Alderman. He married Elizabeth, who was buried Oct. 30, 1606 the daughter and heiress of William Tillesworht; also of the City of London, and had issue four sons and three daughters; he was succeeded at his decease June 24, 1581 by his eldest son, Sir William Bowyer, Knight who purchased the estate of Denham Court. This gentleman was on of the tellers of the Exchequer in the reign of James I. He married Mary the daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Pierson, of Westminster, usher of the Court of Star Chamber, and had (with another son, Robert) a son and heir Henry (Sir), Knight who married Anne the daughter and heiress of Nicholas Salter, of London, and died Dec. 27, 1613, having had two sons, 1) William (Sir) 1st Bt., successor to his grandfather 2) Henry killed in the civil wars fighting under the Royal banner. Sir William died Aug. 1616 (his widow married Feb. 13 1617 to James Ley 1st Earl of Marlborough) and was succeeded by his grandson, Sir William Bowyer 1st Bt., of Denham Court, Bucks, baptized June 29, 1612 was created a Baronet June 26, 1660. Sir William, who was of literary taste and ability and assisted Dryden in his translation of Virgil; represented the County Bucks 1659-79. He married May 29, 1634 to Margaret the daughter of Sir Humphrey Weld, Knight of Arnolds, Middlesex (son and heir of Sir Humphrey Weld, Lord Mayor of London). She died Jan. 8, 1678. He died Oct. 2, 1679, leaving three sons and several daughters; he was succeeded by his eldest son, Sir William Bowyer 2nd Bt., M.P. for County Bucks born 1639 married by licence Dec. 24, 1679, Frances the daughter of Charles, Viscount Cranborne, son of 2nd Earl of Salisbury and by her who died June 15, 1723, had with other issue, 1) Cecil married July 22, 1707 to Juliana the daughter of Richard Parker of Hedsor, Bucks and died Dec. 5, 1720 leaving with three other sons and two daughters, William (Sir), 3rd Bt. 2) William married Elizabeth another daughter of Richard Parker of Hedsor and two sons and a daughter. He died Feb. 13, 1721-22 and was succeeded by his grandson. Sir William Bowyer 3rd Bt., born 1710 married Aug. 21, 1733, Anne the daughter of Rt. Hon. Sir John Stonhouse, Bt. of Radley, Berks, M.P. for Berks and Comptroller of the Household to Queen Anne and by her who died May 22, 1785 had with other issue, 1) William (Sir), 4th Bt. 2) George (Sir), 5th Bt. 3) Richard Atkins-Bowyer who assumed, under the will of Sir Richard Atkins, Bt. of Clapham, Surrey the prefix surname of Atkins. He married Feb. 3, 1773, Elizabeth the daughter of C. Brady of Dublin and died Nov. 21, 1820 leaving with other issue, William of Braywick Grove, Berks, and of Clapham Surrey. Brevet Major 59th Regiment and Bridgade Major to the Forces at Halifax, in the province of Nova Scotia, born Jan 11, 1779, married April 13, 1803 to Frances the daughter of Hon. Behning Wentworth, Sec. She died Jan. 24, 1856. He died Feb 9, 1844 having had with other issue, William Henry Wentworth (Rev.) Rector of Clapham born 1807; married 1st May 12, 1831 Emily the daughter of Henry Harford of Downe Place; Maldenhead and by her (who died June 3, 1840) had with other issue, 1a) Frances Emily married Aug. 26, 1865 to Edward Till of Clapham Common, Surrey, and had issue. He married 2nd April 18, 1844 to Charlotte (who died May 3, 1864) the daughter of Capt. William Wells, R.N. of Holme Wood, County, Huntingdon and died Feb. 25 1872, leaving by her with other issue, 1b) George Edward Wentworth created a Baronet 1933, and Baron Denham 1937. 2b) Aldred William born Mar 15, 1889, died Jan. 10 1890. 3b) Richard Grenville, Lieut.
