Meaning, Origin, Etymology
Maguire (pronounced: /məˈɡwaɪər/ mə-GWIRE) this surname is also commonly spelled MacGuire or McGuire.  It is an Irish surname that is from the Gaelic Mag Uidhir, which means the “son of Odhar” or “son of the dun or dark coloured one.”  Maguires/MacGuire/McGuires were Kings of Fermanagh from the 13th to the 17th centuries. They possessed the entire County of Fermanagh and it was known as Maguire’s Country from 1250 A.D. to the reign of King James VI.  At that time their lands were confiscated just like many other parts of Ulster. The Maguires/MacGuires/McGuires supplied Chiefs or Princes to Fermanagh throughout their reign. These families were first mentioned in the Annals around 956 A.D. and have been close with other Septs of Ulster such as the O’Neill and O’Donnell septs.  From these unions several well-known branches which became septs with their own rights. Among them can be found MacManus, MacCaffrey, MacHugh and many others. The McGuire Royal Family (Maguidhirs) lived in the McGuire (Maguidhir) castle in Enniskillen. The origins of the island town of Enniskillen go back to prehistory when this short nexus was the main highway between Ulster and Connaught.  Enniskillen Castle was the medieval seat of the McGuire (Maguidhir), chieftains of Fermanagh, who policed the lough with a private navy of 1500 boats. Nearby is Maguiresbridge. At the castle, the King heard wind of a large army that had been sent to attack. Fearing the loss of all his clan, he sent half of his people to the northwest of Scotland, who adopted the surname of MacQuarrie. In Scotland the surname of MacQuarrie means son of Guaire or Godfrey.  Guaire was a son of Alpin, King of Scotland.

McGuire, Samuel Edward, Esq. of Clonea House, County, Waterford, J.P., High Sheriff 1869 born 1816; called to the Irish Bar; succeeded his brother 1851; married 1852 to Charlotte the daughter of Right Hon. Sir William MacMahon, Bart. Master of the Rolls in Ireland, and has issue 1) William Walter born March 26, 1853.  2) Charlotte Mary born May 10, 1855; died July 19, 1875 3) Emily Mary born November 12, 1857 4) Augusta Maria born March 7, 1859.
Lineage ~ This is a branch of the House of McGuire, anciently MacUiduir, Lords of Fermanagh, who were ennobled in 1627, under the title of Lord Enniskillen.  Thomas More McGuire, Chief of McGuire and Lord of Fermanagh, called Giolla Dubii, or the dark-haired youth, married Margaret the daughter of Con O’Neill, Chief of Tyrone; and died 1430, leaving with other issue,  1) Philip, Chief of McGuire, from whom descended the McGuires of Tempo, County, Fermanagh, subsequent chiefs of McGuire. 2) Thomas Oge married Juliana the daughter of the MacCallum Moore; died 1840 leaving inter alios, a) Edmond, ancestor of the McGuires of Knockaninny, County, Fermanagh, from a branch of which line descends John McGuire, Esq. of Tralee, whose 3rd daughter Louisa Rebecca married July 6, 1872 John H. Glascott, Esq. of Killowen, J.P., County Wexford.  b) Connor More, ancestor of the Maguires, Lords Enniskillen. 3) Hugh, ancestor of the line treated of here 4) Rory, consecrated Bishop of Clogher 1449 died 1483. Hugh McGuire the 3rd son was called “Hugh Neinagh,” died 1488. Seventh in descent from him was Richard McGuire, Esq. of County, Fermanagh, as described in the pedigree of this family registered in Ulster’s Office, Dublin Castle; he had two sons, 1) William who carried on this line. 2) Richard who settled at Moyalley, County, Limerick after 1641; married Katherine the widow of Very Rev. John Fitzgerald, Dean of Cork and d.s.p.; will dated February 1, 1690.  William McGuire, Esq., the eldest son, settled in Dublin and was father of Richard McGuire, Esq. of Dublin who married Elilzabeth the daughter of Alexander de Barde Duterail, of Dublin, a French refugee (who died March 1752). He died 1727, leaving a son, William McGuire, Esq. of Dublin born 1699, entered Trinity College Dublin July 9, 1716; married Elizabeth the daughter of Rev. Francis Annesley, LL.D., Rector of Winwick, County Lancaster; by her (who survived him and made her will July 12, 1784, which was proved February 7, 1789) he had issue, 1) Richard died without issue. 2) Francis died without issue 3) William of George Street, Hanover Square, London born April 22, 1723 married Lucy Beard, widow of Governor Fytche of Bengal and had a daughter Lucy who married Rev.
