Trujillo Surname Name Meaning, Origin, History, & Etymology
This is a Spanish habitational surname denoting a person who was from the city of Trujillo in the province of Cáceres, Spain, which is today located in the autonomous community of Extremadura near the border with Portugal. The city/village was called Turgalium in Latin, and the name is ultimately Arabic in origin. Bear in mind nearly all of the Iberian Peninsula was conquered by Moorish Muslim armies of North Africa starting in 711 AD. It is interesting to note that many conquistadors, soldiers/explorers who sailed to the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, were from this town. Eldson Coles Smith, in his 1956 book titled Dictionary of American Family Names, states the town’s name meant “citadel of Julian”. Citadels were core fortified areas of towns first popularized in ancient Greece. However, Balaz Deri offers another origin theory as follows: “The city of Trujillo and the family from there may bear in its present form the name of Trókhilos from Argos,a relative of Gordys and Triptolemos, some of the offspring of whom may have settled in ancient times in Truk island of Micronésia as well and was from there exiled into Europe to found colonies all around as far as in Hispania and in the far North as well. Perhaps even tsut’ujil ( tsu-trukhil ) tribe of kiches descended from him. Yucatan and Paraíba in any case just like Aquitania and Ibéria got the name of A-Wa-Ka-Tan-Na and of his son A’ayab-Pa-War-Ra”.

The name first established itself in the medieval Kingdom of Aragon, which existed from 1035 AD to 1707 AD, located in modern day northeastern Spain. One of the earliest documented bearers of this surname was Isabel Trujillo who was born in Spain around 1470 AD. She married Luis Melian de Bethencourt in Seville, Spain around 1495 AD and had two issue: Francisco Melian and Diego Melian. Spelling variants or names with similar etymologies include: Truxillo, Trugillo, Trullo, Trujilo, Truijillo, and Trujuillo.
