(Kent; of very ancient settlement in that county; before the time of Edward III. it was divided into two chief branches—the Colepeppers of Preston Hall, and the Colepeppers of Bay Hall; from the latter descended those of Bedgebury, Wakehurst, Wigshill, and the lords Culpeper, of Thoresway. Which was the elder line has not, however, been established, each claiming seniority; all bore the same coat armour without difference, and carried it on the field of battle; at Poitiers one Colepeper it stated to have borne on a silver shield “a bloody bend engrailed”).
