Historically, scholars have categorized the German-surname Ilgenfritz as a patronymic. This surname, like many others, derives its origin from the given name of the father, grandfather, or other, more distant, a male ancestor of the original bearer of the name. “The oldest and most common type of surname is one derived from a given name.” In the case of Ilgenfritz, it appears to be a combination of two popular German personal names: Ilgen, and Fritz, here combined as is often done in English. In Greek mythology, Ilgen was also the name of Zeus’ shield. It is a pet form of the name Aegidius, which means “young goat.”
