Meaning, Origin, Etymology
The English surname Sumpter is of occupational origin, being one of those names that was descriptive of the type of work a man did or the profession he pursued. During the Middle Ages when the system of surnames first developed it was inevitable that a person would be described by their craft or trade which occupied so much of their time. In this case, the name means “a pack-horseman or one who carried baggage on horseback”. More recently, this name is applied to the horse rather than the driver, but in the medieval period the name meant a driver of a pack-horse. Generally, the sumpter would have been employed in the house of a nobleman. His duty would have been to carry provisions to the buttery for storage there.
