The English surname Wykes is local in origin belonging to that group of surnames derived from the place where a man once lived or where he once held land. In this case the surname comes from the Old English word “wic” which originally meant “dwelling place” but in the Middle Ages came to mean “village” and in some instances “dairy farm”. The bearer of this surname would have been one who dwelt “at the village” or who worked “at the farm”. This word has also given us several place names including Wix in Essex, Wyke and Wick in a number of counties. It may be that the original bearer of this surname resided “at Wix” or “at Wyke”. Another possibility is that the surname was adopted by one who resided “at the wych-elm”
