Meaning, Origin, Etymology
The Elledge Surname History was derived from the Old English name ‘Aelfric’ which was a baptismal name that dates back to the 11th century.  The name was brought into England during the Norman Conquest of 1066, and the first name on record is Aluric (without surname) who was listed as a tenant in the Domesday Book of 1086.  This surname is a locative or topographic surname that is derived from the place where the original bearer once live or held land.  The surname of Illidge can be traced to the place name of Illidge Green which was located northeast of Sandbach in Cheshire.  This place name is of uncertain origin but the name appears to be derived from the Old English Anglo-Norman French “isle, ile” meaning “an islet” and the Old English word “lache” meaning “a lake”. Thus the surname may signify “one who lived near the islet by the lake”. This fashion of adopting descriptive names or surnames had developed by the thirteenth century as the population became more complex. Another location that the name derived from was Aldridge Grove in Buckinghamshire or from a small spot in County Worcestershire, now extinct.
