Jager Family Crest, Coat of Arms and Name History

This generally believed to be a German occupational surname, literally meaning “the hunter” or “the huntsman”, hence why the family arms contains a hunting horn. The Middle Dutch word is jagher. One source claims it was first found in East Prussia, but another claims it originated in Denmark. It is also a Slovenian name. The earliest known spelling of the name was that of Berchtand Jager, who was documented in the records of Burgtal, Austria, in 1280 AD. Spelling variations include Jeger, Jaeger, Yaggar, Yaegar, Jaggers, and several others. The arms listed on this page were recorded in Rietstap’s Armorial General (published in 1861) as being from various locations in Germany, Austria, Holland,  Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. Early settlers in the United States bearing this surname include Baltes and Wendel Jager (New York 1709) and Catharina Jager (Pennsylvania 1732). One of the most notable persons bearing this name is Jamomir Jagr, a Czech professional hockey player in the NHL who started his career with the Pittsburgh Penguins. A one Nikolaus Jager was born in 1710 and married Elisabeth Zolle, and had a son named Moritz. Moritz was born in 1743 in Saarburg, Germany. He married Gertrud Haffner in 1766 and had numerous issue with her: Katharina, Elisabeth, Moritz, Maria, Nickoluas, Johann, and Gertrud. His son Moritz Jager was born in 1773 in Saarlouis, Germany. A one Jacob Jager was born in 1611 and married Anna Rysch before passing away in 1656. A one James Jagger was born in 1843 in Southowram and worked in the mines of West Yorkshire, England before moving to Illinois.
