Meaning, Origin, Etymology

The name Lloyd is a variation of the Welsh word llwyd or clwyd, which means “grey” or “brown” (Llwyd is also used as a personal name). The double-l represents the voiceless alveolar lateral fricative of Welsh, and was sometimes also represented as fl, yielding the related name Floyd which can also be a variation of the family name Flood . It is a well-known Welsh personal name. As an hereditary surname it does not date beyond the 16th century, yet many of the families bearing it are of great antiquity, as, for example :-Lloyd of Bronwydd is 23rd lord of the Barony of Kemes, co. Pembroke, in hereditary descent from Martin de Tours, a companion of William the Conqueror. Lloyd of Plymog claims from Marchudd ap Cynan, who flourished in the IX. cent., and founded the eighth noble tribe of North Wales, and Powys: King Henry VII. sprang from this family. Lineage: The Lloyds of Aston have been seated at Aston from an early period, and derive from the royal House of Powys, through their immediate progenitor, Einion Efell, Lord of Cynllaeth, son of Madoc, lat Prince of Powys. Andrew Lloyd, Esq. of Aston like his neighbour, Mytton, of Halston, adopted the cause of the Parliament against King Charles I., and held a Captain’s commission in the army. Captain Lloyd married Margaret, daughter of Thomas Powell, of Whittington Park, and had, with other issue. Thomas, his heir, and Richard (Sir), Chancellor of Durham, and Judge of the Admiralty Court, father of Sir Nathaniel Lloyd, Knight, a liberal benefactor to the colleges of Trinity Hall and All Souls’, Oxford. The elder son. Thomas Lloyd, Esq. of Aston, acquired by marriage with Sarah, dau. and co-heir of Frances Albany, Esq., the lordship and estate of Whittington, Salop, and had, inter alios, Robert, his heir; Elizabeth marriedFoulk Lloyd, Esq. of Foxhall, County, Denbigh (descended in the male line, from Wiliam Rosindale, grandson of Henry Rosindale, of Rosindale, County Lancaster, who adopted the surname. Of the Hellan and Foxhal family, Humphrey Lloyd, the celebrated antiquary, was a descendant). Elizabeth and Foulk Lloyd had three sons: John Lloyd, Thomas Lloyd, and Rosindale Lloyd who married daughter of Robert Davies, Esq. of Liannerch and d. 1734. He had William (Rev.), who succeeded his uncle at Aston. Mr. Lloyd d. 1692, and was succeeded by his son, Robert Lloyd, Esq. of Aston, Member of Parliament County Salop, who married Mary, eldest daughter of Sir John Bridgeman, Bart, and left a son and heir, Robert Lloyd, Esq. of Aston, Member of Parliament County Salop. He d. 7 June 1734, when the Aston and other estates devolved upon (the eldest son of his aunt) his cousin, John Lloyd, Esq. Of Foxhall, who dying without issue, 1741, was succeeded by his brother, Thomas Lloyd, Esq. of Aston, at whose decease, unmarried, 1754, the estates passed to his nephew. The Rev. William Lloyd, of Aston. This gentleman married Elizabeth, daughter of William Sneyd, Esq. of Bishton, county Stafford, and had an only son and heir, The Rev. John Robert Lloyd of Aston, who married Martha, 4th daughter of John Shakespeare, Esq. of London, and had issue, 1) William his heir 2) Charles Arthur Albany (Rev.) Rector of Whittington, Salop, b. 1785; married Mrs. Hannah Simpson Cowan; and d. 1851, leaving three children. 3) George Newton Kynaston (Rev.), Rector selattyn, Salop, b. 1780; married Miss Corrie; and d. 1848, leaving three children. The representative of this long descended line, John Lloyd, Esq. of Berth, Lianbedr, County Denbigh; Chief Justice of Carmarthen Circuit, born 1746, d. 1806, leaving a son, Edward Lloyd, Esq. of Berth, County, Denbigh, and Rhagatt, near Corwen, Justice of the Peace.; married Frances, daughter of J. Madocks, Esq. of Fron Iw, County Denbigh, and had two sons, 1) John his heir 2) Edward married Mary Eliza, dau. of John Madocks, Esq. of Glanywern, County Denbigh, and d. 1863, leaving a son, Edward Owen Vaughan, now of Rhagatt, Sophy. 3) Howel William, married Eliza, daughter of G. Lineage ~ Rev. Coulston Carr had a daughter, Elizabeth Ann, married Sir James Martin Lloyd, Bart. of Lancing, and a son, Right Rev. Robert James Carr, D.D., Consecrated Bishop of Chichester 1824, and translated to Worcester 1831. He m. 1795, Nancy, daughter of John Wilkinson, Esq. and by her (who d. Nov. 1839) he left at his decease, April 1841, a dau., Sybella Jane, m. 12 Dec. 1826, Charles Peckman Peckham, Esq. of Nyton, Sussex, and a son, Col. George Kibwan Carr, of Lancing, J.P. and D.L., High Sheriff of Sussex, who assumed the additional surname of Lloyd 1858, on succeeding to the property of his aunt, Lady Lloyd, widow of Sir James Martin Lloyd, Bart. of Lancing Manor. He married 1st Caroline, 5th daughter of Admiral Sir Michael Seymour, Bart., K.C.B., and by her (who died 1843) had two daughters, 1) Caroline Diana Frances, m. H.M. Anketell Jones, Esq. of Drummany, County Cavan. 2) Jane Seymour, liev.. V.H. Aldman, and died Jan. 1878, leaving issue. He married 2ndly, April 1847, Jane, eldest daughter of John Watson, Esq. of Wick Lodge Sussex and by her had issue, 1) James Martin, now of Lancing Manor 2) George Spencer, died May 1866 3) Elizabeth Melville 4) Mary Frances. Lineage ~ The Lloyds of Glangwilly, now represented by the family of Price, were in direct descent from Ruodromawb, King of Wales. Thomas Lloyd, Esq. of Glangwilly, High Sheriff 1656, was son of Griffith Lloyd, of Glangwilly, and grandson of John Lloyd, Esq., High Sheriff 1609, who was son of David Lloyd of Griffith, of Llanlawddog, by Catherine his wife, daughter and co-heir of John Stedman, Esq. of Kilkennin, of Henry Vaughn of Trawscoed, ancestor of the Earls of Lisburne, and was father of John Lloyd, Esq. of Glangwilly, High Sheriff County, Cardigan, 1683, married Anne daughter of James Johnes, Esq. of Donau Cothi, Sheriff County Carmarthen 1667, and left two daughters and co-heirs Anne and Mary. The younger married Miles Stedman, Esq. of Dolygaer, County Brecon, and was mother of Dorothy, wife of Rev. Thomas rotliero. The late Llewelyn Falkner Lloyd, Esq. of Cilcen Hall and Plas-yn-llan, County Flint, J.P. for Counties Flint and Denbigh, and D.L. for the former, High Sheriff County, Flint 1847 born 8 July 1809; married 28 July 1841, Mary Susan, only daughter of Rev. William Wickham Drake, Rector of Malpas, County Chester and died 27 Aug. 1873, leaving a daughter, Mary Frances.

David Daniel, of Jesus Coll. Oxon, Chaplain of Hampton Court, by Clemena his wife, daughter of Major Lyons, and has issue, a daughter Edith.

Lineage ~ Cadivor, Dyfnwal, Lord of Castle Howel, 9th in descent from Rhodri Mawr, the Great King of all Wales, took by escalade, 11 Henry II. the castle of Cardigan from the Earl of Clare and the Flemings, for which service his kinsman, the great Lord Rhys, of South Wales, gave him considerable lands and a new shield of Arms. By his wife Katherine, daughter of his Prince and kinsman, the great Lord Rhys, he had, with other issue, a son, Rhydderch AP Cadivor, Lord of Castle Howel, married Jennet, daughter of Aron AP Rhys AP Bledri, Lord of Kilsaint and Knight of the Sepulehre, who went with Richard Coeur de Lion to Palenstine against the Infidels. The 3rd son, Cadwgan Fawr AP Rhys, was father of Cadwgan Vychan, of Carrog, County Cardigan, whose son, Cadwgan Grach, of Carrog. married Eva, daughter of Meredydd Vychan ap Mercdydd ap Rchard Rydderch ap Bledri, and had a son, Llewellin AP Cadwgan Grach, married Gwladys, daughter of Meredydd Fawr ap Meredydd ap Richard, of Iraenau, County Carmarthen, and was direct ancestor of John Lloyd, Esq. of Foes-y-Bleiddied, married Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of Thomas Lloyd, Esq. of Wernvylyg and Llanllyr, and had (with two daughters Lettice, married Thomas Edwards, Esq. of Rhydd-y-Gors; and Catherine, married Jenkin Glloyd of Lianvaughan) a son and successor, David Lloyd, Esq. of Foes-y-Bleiddied, who was a favorite of James II., and attended that King in all his troubles. Lineage ~ This family is supposed to descend from the Lloyds of Llanynys, County Denbigh. Gamaliel Lloyd, of Mattersey, County Nottingham, died 1 Nov. 1661, leaving issue by his wife, Anne Briggs, of Wigan, in County Lancaster, George his heir; Gamaliel; William whose representatives are now the Booths of Glendon, Notts; John; Anne, married Joseph Smethurst, and had a numerous posterity. The eldest son, George Lloyd, born 1650, settled at Manchester, and died 1728, leaving by his wife, Martha Whittaker, of Newton Heath, County Lancaster, an only surviving son, Gamaliel Lloyd, of Manchester, Merchant and Manufacturer, died 1749, leaving by Elizabeth his wife, daughter and co-heir of John Carte, M.B., of Manchester, who died 30 Sept. 1763, an only child, George Lloyd, Esq., M.B., Cantab., F.R.S., D.L. for West Riding County York, who purchased Hulme Hall, near Manchester, and resided at Barrowby, near Leeds, where he died 4 Dec. 1783. Counties Brecknock, Monmouth, and Hereford and Borough of Brecknock; Lord of the Manor of Penalt and Aberonney, High Sheriff County Brecknock 1878, born 1828; married 1876, Katherine Eliza, only daughter of W. Campbell-Davys, Esq. of Neuadd-fawr, County Carmarthen, and has issue 1) John Conway born 19 April 1878. 2) Jane Katherine Muriel born 8 May 1877.

Lineage ~ This family claims descent from Elystan Glodrydd, Prince of Ferlys, the territory between the rivers Wye and Severn, which had its own princes Independent of those of South Wales. To his son, Cadwgan, Elystan Glodrydd gave the whole of County Radnor, part of County Montgomery, and the greater portion of the Hundred Builth, County Brecon. Thomas Lloyd AP Meredith, Elystan’s descendant married Elen daughter of Howel ap Phillip, ap David of Cynghordy County Carmarthen; and 2ndly, Angharad, daughter of Morgan ap Evan Lloyd. He was the first Lord-Lieutenant of County Brecon, and a warm partizan of Henry VII., from whom he had a grant of a portion of the sequestered estates of Strata Florida Abbey. He had issue a daughter who married Morgan Goch; and two sons, Rees Lloyd and John Lloyd, Esq. of Porthyerwys, Esquire of the body to Queen Elizabeth married Margaret daughter of Evan Howel ap Morgan and died 1585. His sons were David Lloyd, of Towy; John Lloyd and William Lloyd. Rees Lloyd, the eldest son of Thomas Lloyd ap Meredith, married Jane daughter of William Herbert of Colbrook; and 2ndly a daughter of Gwilym Howel ap Gwilym dew. His issue were, 1) William Lloyd married Elen daughter of Madoc ap Gwilym ap Madoc ap Howel ap Richard ap Griffith Moel. He had four daughters Catherine married Morgan ap Rees ap William; Joan married Edward Lewis; Mallt married Roger Price of Aberannell; and Mand married David Lewis of Llanavan. 2) Rhytherch Lloyd married Mand daughter of Howel ap Evan a descendant of Elystan Glodrydd. His son, William Lloyd married a daughter of Morgan Goch ap Rees ap Morgan. 4) David Lloyd of whom presently. 5) Thomas Lloyd from whom the Lloyds of Aberannell are descended. 5) Morris Lloyd from whom the Lloyds of Carmarthen and County Pembroke and 6) Rhys Lloyd. David Lloyd (described as 3rd son of Rees Lloyd, the eldest son of Thomas Lloyd ap Meredith) married and had a son. Rees David Lloyd married a daughter of David Howel Phylip Trericket and had issue. John AP Rees David Llloyd married and died 1683. He had two sons and a daughter; the younger son, Rees ap John, assumed the surname of Jones from his father’s Christian name of John, in accordance with Welsh custom of that time, whilst the elder son, John Lloyd, retained the family surname of Lloyd, and resided at Dinas in Llanwrtyd. He married Ruhama daughter of Mr. Jones, of Cribarth, and had issue, a dau., Mary Lloyd, m. her cousin, Thomas Jones, Esq. of Dolycoed; and a son. Rees Lloyd, Esq. of Dinas married Elizabeth Jones of Danneryg. His son, John Lloyd, Esq. of Dinas and Llangattock Court, J.P., High Sheriff 1846, educated at Eton and Balliol College Oxford, born 1797; married 1st 1826 Mary Anne, daughter of Osborne Yeats, Esq. of Llangattock Court, Brecknock; and 2ndly 1838, Frances, daughter of Thomas Mayberry, Esq. of Brecon, and died Dec. 1875, leaving by his 1st wife, three sons, 1) Thomas Conway, his heir, now of Dinas 2) Penry, Chief Constable of County Radnor and J.P. Counties Brecknock and Radnor, born 1831; married 1862, Mary only daughter of J. Lineage ~ The family of Lloyd of Trallwyn is one of great antiquity in Wales, and the present Mr. Lloyd possesses a roll setting forth the pedigree from a remote period. John Ellis, Esq. born 1 Nov. 1786 (son of Hugh Ellis, Esq.) of Carnarvon, by Anne his wife, daughter of Samuel Wright, Esq. of Knutsford, and grandson of the Venerable John Ellis, Archdeacon of Merioneth, by Anne his wife, daughter and heir of Hugh Lloyd, Esq. of Trallwyn) assumed by royal license, 1811, the surname and arms of LLOYD, in compliance with the testamentary injunction of his grand-uncle, the Rev. William Lloyd, son of Hugh Lloyd, Esq. of Trallwyn. He was a Magistrate and Deputy-Lieutenant for County Carnarvon, and served as High Sheriff 1817. He married 5 Dec. 1815, June, daughter of the Rev. JOHN MERRICK LLOYD, of Croghan House, County Roscommon, Justice of the Peace., Deputy Lieutenant, High Sheriff for County Leitrim 1902 and for County Roscommon 1911 Master of Arts Trinity College Dublin, born 1846 ; married 5 July, 1900, Frances Emily, daughter of John Henry Darley, of Ferney, County Dublin. He succeeded his brother 1906.

CAPTAIN OWEN LLOYD, of Croghan, County Roscommon, Member of Parliament for Boyle, ib6r, the first possessor of that estate, born 1633, at Cavetown, County Roscommon, was eldest son of Thomas Lloyd,of County Leitrim, who migrated from Wales to Ireland under the auspices of his kinsman, Sir Ralph Bingley. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Fitzgerald, of Castle Dod, County Cork, and left at his decease, 1664 (will proved 1685), three sons and three daughters, 1. THOMAS FRANCIS LLOYD, of Beechmount, Rathkeale, County Limerick, Justice of the Peace. and Deputy Lieutenant, High Sheriff 1894, Major-General, in the Army (retired) ; formerly Colonel commanding 2nd Regional District, and Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding 98th Regiment ; sometime Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General Cork District; born 21 April, 1839 ; married 26 May, 1870, Mary Henrietta, daughter of Christian Allhusen, Deputy Lietenant, of Stoke Court, Bucks, and has had issue, Thomas Henry Eyre, Captain Coldstream Guards, born 2 May, 1871; died unmarried, distinguished himself for his bravery in South Africa, where he was Assistant Staff Officer to Colonel Benson’s column, and was killed in action at Brakenlaagte, Eastern Transvaal, South Africa, 25 Oct. 1901.

This gallant officer was frequently mentioned in dispatches. Major Hoystead claims precedence since the death of that excellent and gallant officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Lloyd of the 84th Regiment. Lieutenant-General Sir John Hope reports most favorably of the conduct of all the officers, and particularly mentions Major-Gens. Robinson and Bradford and Lieut.-Col. HUMPHREY LLOYD, Doctor of Divinity, Fellow of the Royal Society, of Victoria Castle, Killancy, County Dublin, born 16 April, 1800 ; Scholar of Trinity College Dublin 1819, Fellow 1824, and Provost 1867. He was the author of the Wave Theory of Light, and several other scientific works. In 1874 received the order ” Pour le Merite ” from the German Emperor, was also President Royal Irish Academy. He married 14 July, 1840, Dorothea Maria Redfoord (who died 21 April, 1905), only daughter of Rev. James Bulwer, Rector of Hungworth, County Norfolk; and sister of James Bulwer, late Member of Parliament Cambridge ; and died without issue 17 Jan. 1881, and was succeeeded by his nephew.

By his wife Elizabeth (married about 1780 or 1781), daughter of James Attwood, he had issue, with two daughters, Mary Horton, married Stephen John Winthrop, Doctor of Medicine ; Anne Susannah, married Leonard Homer, Fellow of the Royal Society, an only son, WILLIAM HORTON LLOYD, F.L.S., possessor of estates in Counties York, Lancaster, and Derby, born 10 Feb. 1784 ; married 13 April, 1826, Mary (who died 18 Feb. 1882), 6th and youngest daughter of George Whitelocke,. of Seymour Place, Bryanston Square, London, and Fortoiseau, near Paris (a great-grandson of Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke), by Mary his wife, daughter of David Roche, Alderman of Limerick, and died 18 Feb. 1849, having had issue, Gamaliel, born 12 June, 1827 ; died 6 Nov. 1830 ; and the late GEORGE WHITELOCKE WHITELOCKE-LLOYD, of Strancally Castle. Lineage. JOHN WHITELOCKE, of an old Berkshire family possessed for several generations of a considerable property in Berksas well as in Counties Oxford and Buckingham, was living in the reign of HENRY VI, and married 1459, Agnes, only daughter and heir of ROBERT DE LA BECHE (the last male descendant of the De la Beche family of County Buckingham, whose progenitor WILLIAM DE LA BECHE is mentioned in deeds of 15 and 31 HENRY III), and was succeeeded by his son, WILLIAM WHITELOCKE, living 1509, who left by his Wife, whose name was Cowdry, a son, RICHARD WHITELOCKE, living. By his wife, who was of the family of Grove, near Funge?, he had issue, 1. William (Rev.), Fellow and Vice-Provost of King’s Coll. Camb., Vicar of Frescott, diocese of Chester, and Canon of Lichfield, died unmarried at Lichfield, aged 5o years. 2. John, married at 45 years of age the daughter of Planer, of Okingharn, County Berks, who was then aged 17, and had, 1. William, Lord of the Manor of Beches, County Berks, and Beches-Lands, County Oxford, married Ursula, daughter of George Beresford, by Mary his wife, daughter of John Colte, and had a son, William., Lord of the Manor of Beches, at Visitation, Bucks, 1634. 2. John, one of the King’s household in the Vafery, married the widow of his kinsman, Rev. William Whitelocke, Vicar of Sunning. 3. De la Eeche, living 1634. 3. Heirom, who died aged over 60 years, leaving a son, William (Rev.), Master of Arts, Oxford, Vicar of Sunning, and Prebendary of Wells and Lichfield, left by his wife (who m. 2ndly, John Whitelocke, of the King’s household) a son, William, living 1634. 4. RICHARD, ancestor of the line treated of here. Mr. Whitelocke was party to deeds made 10 HENRY VII and i HENRY VIII. His youngest son, RICHARD WHITELOCKE, of London, was born at Beches about 1533, became a Merchant, and was made free of the ” Merchant Adventurers.” He married 7 Feb. 1563, Joan, daughter of John Colte, County Hertford, and widow of Mr. Brockhurst, of London, Merchant (who died of the plague, 5 Queen ELIZABETH), by whom (who married 2ndly, Thomas Price, of London, Merchant, and died 21 Feb. 1606) he had issue, 1. Edmund, born 10 Feb. 1564, Captainof Infantry, served in Provence. Was indicted of high treason with Robert, ist Earl of Essex, but was discharged ; accused of being concerned in the Gunpowder Plot, 1605 ; died without issue1608. 2. Richard of Elbing, in Spruceland, Sweden, born 28 Dec. 1565, sent to Dantzic at the age of 16 ; married Katherine Dambits, of Elbing, and died 1624, leaving with two daughters., Katherine, married Smith, of Clundby, and another married Captain Potley, as many sons, 1. Entered Oxford University at sixteen, the Middle Temple at eighteen, and was admitted a barrister 1626. He was Member of Parliament for Stafford 1629, for Great Marlow 1640, for Oxford 165.1, and for County Buckingham 1656. In 1632 he was appointed Recorder of Abingdon, and was deputed 1642 on the breaking out of the Civil War, to prevent the execution of a Royal array in County Oxford. In 1644 he was member of the commission to treat with the King, and a Commissioner of the Admiralty 1645. He garrisoned Phyllyscourt against the King 1646. Was appointed one of the Commissioners of the Great Seal 2 March, 1648 ; Serjeant-at-Law, 2 Oct. following ; and was sent by OLIVER CROMWELL as Ambassador to Sweden 2 Sept. 16*3, which post he resigned in 1654. He was summoned to OLIVER CROWWELL’S ” Other House ” by writs, n Dec. 1655, and ii Dec. 1656, and was created a Viscount by a patent, dated 21 Aug. 1657. Noble Tribe of North Wales and Powys, living in the middle of the 9th century. Arms, those of Ednyfed Vychan, viz., Gu. a chev. erm. betw. three Englishmen’s heads in profile ppr., quartering the bearings of: 1) Iwfa ap Kendrig, Lord of Christionydol; 2) Rhys ap Griffith, derived from Ynyr, Lord of Yale; 3) Davies, of Denbigh, derived from Ednowain Bendew, Lord of Tegaingle, Founder of the XIII. Noble Tribe of North Wales and Powys; 4) Hughes, of Gwerclas, Barons of Kymmer-yn-Edeirnion [see that name]; 5) Walmesley, of Coldcoates Hall, co. Lancaster, and Bashall Hall [see that name].
