Meaning, Origin, Etymology
There are a number of explanations as to the origin of the surname Reed. First of all, it is of nickname origin being derived from the physical or personal characteristics of the initial bearer. In this case, Reed is associated with an Old English term ‘read’ which means ‘red’ and it would have been applied to one who had red hair or indeed a ruddy complexion. Alternatively, Reed may in fact be of local origin this time deriving from the place where a man once lived or where he once held land. Here, Reed is linked to the term ‘ried’ or ‘ryd’ which means ‘clearing’ and so the surname may equally have developed as an attempt to identify one who lived near such a feature.
