This is a very noble and ancient family of the Kingdom of Naples. They are related to some of the most illustrious families within the Kingdom. The ancestral nobility of the Schiano family is confirmed in the Collections of Count Berardo Candido Gonzaga “Memories of the noble families of the southern provinces of Italy”. The origin of the name is unknown it may be derived from the Italian word “schiavone,” which simply means a “Slav;” thus the original bearer came from one of the Slavic countries to Italy. Alternately, the Schiano surname may come from the Italian word “schiavo,” which literally means “slave.”
There is news of a family branch called Schiano del Moriello originally from Procida with an M. who passed in Marseille obtained French citizenship in the early nineteenth century as recorded in the bulletin des lois de la République française, printed in Paris 1852.
Schiano has a nucleus in the island of Elba and one in Naples, Schisani, absolutely rare, it would also be Neapolitan, Schisano, quite uncommon, is specific to the Neapolitan, Sclano, very rare, is typical of the island of Elba, all these surnames should Derive from the apheretic forms of an ethnic one that regards the founder originating from the island of Ischia. We find historical traces of these surnames in the Avellinese in 1400 with a certain fat Masullo, said Sclano quoted in an act of sale, in 1632 are listed as readers of Law in Caltagirone (CT) The Doctors Francesco and Michele Schisano and, in 1700 , we find the Martyrs Ultrasixty-year-old of the Neapolitan Republic Onofrio and Salvatore Schiano di Procida, executed in 1799 by the Bourbon troops. Additions provided by Raffaello Sclano migrated from Spain to Sicily in 1200, then marquises of the Caves (in Grottola (MT)), Lords of Procida (NA) for four centuries: This House includes bishops, Pievans and generals.
