The Jewish Virtual Library states the name Rote, along with its related surnames ( Rutty, Ruti, Rute) indicates descent from “an Al-Arabic-Moroccan family which originated either in Rota on the Bay of Cadiz or in Morocco”., or in Rueda (At. Rotʾa), Aragon.” According to the Neubauer Chronicles, some of Spain’s most prominent Rotes could be found in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Rote name can be traced back to the 14th century when Rotes were prominent members of the Jewish community.
